Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.) has never been a favorite of the Indiana GOP — and he’s got four potential primary challengers to prove it.
Coming off a 2008 primary challenge that was closer than most observers anticipated, Burton has four potential foes for 2010, including his 2008 opponent, John McGoff.
GOP insiders say Burton, who is not well-liked within the state’s GOP, may face his toughest challenge this cycle.
“The state party won’t actively work against him,” one insider said on the condition of anonymity, “but it won’t work for him, either.”
In 2008, McGoff, a relative newcomer to politics, surprised observers with his campaign to unseat the 14-term incumbent. After reports surfaced that he had skipped votes, Burton appeared vulnerable. Although McGoff was vastly outspent in the race for the central Indiana district, he lost 45 percent to 52 in a comfortably red district — closer than most expected. |
