DescriptionThe Republicans of the US Congress have revamped their website to be more open and engaging with citizens. The new site makes it easy to get the latest news and to contact representatives, and even has an API.

Whitehouse.gov isn't the only governmental website that has gotten a Web 2.0 (well, maybe more like a Web 1.5) makeover. The Republicans members of Congress have revamped their own Web site with some modern touches as well. The new and improved GOP.gov has not only gotten a bit of a redesign, it has added some useful core functionality that should help the GOP extend its reach to more of the Internet-using public.

Under the surface, GOP.gov has joined the Democrats at Whitehouse.gov (and before that, change.gov) in adding a plethora of RSS feeds for interested citizens to keep up on the news. And there are plenty of them, as evidenced by the dedicated RSS feed page, ranging from the last 50 bills to feeds for every committee to videos posted to the site, and nearly everything else one could think of. Most of the feeds appear to work, though all the ones under "Media" (which includes videos, photos, the weekly radio address, the audio podcast, and the video podcast) seem to be broken at the moment.

Overall, the site looks good and works (mostly) smoothly. We're certainly liking this new push towards openness and participation from both sides of the aisle, and hope it's not a passing fad.
