DescriptionJERUSALEM – Dozens of campaign posters in Jerusalem featuring the Israeli foreign minister have been vandalized, with Tzipi Livni's face painted over or scratched out. The posters of her male rivals in the election race have been left untouched.

In the past, extreme groups in the city's ultra-Orthodox Jewish community have opposed the presence of women's likenesses on billboards, calling them immodest. Provocative ads are regularly defaced, and during a recent municipal election Jerusalem buses banned posters advertising women candidates.

Police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said Tuesday that an investigation was under way. He gave no further details.

Israel's national election is on Feb. 10. Polls show Livni trailing the front-runner, hard-line Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu, with Defense Minister Ehud Barak in third place.

Both men have suggested Livni is not equipped to lead the country. Livni's camp has accused her opponents of sexism and acknowledged that her gender might be hurting her in the polls, especially since defense issues top the agenda following Israel's Gaza offensive.
