Description | Barbara Gardner hopes Independence City Hall’s Council Chambers are so full of people during Tuesday’s Independence Planning Commission meeting that she’ll hardly fit in the door.
The e-mails are circulating, blog posts are taking place at The Examiner’s Web site and people are traveling door to door.
They’re spreading the word about a proposed private detention center in western Independence.
Gardner, 1733 S. Brookside Ave., is just one of the residents who is talking about the proposed private detention center that would be located one-quarter mile north of 23rd Street on the east side of Blue Ridge Boulevard. Planning Commission members will hear a city staff report from Senior Planner Stuart Borders and will consider the application during their meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Independence City Hall.
On a 46-acre tract of land, the proposed Metropolitan Detention Center would be located on existing undeveloped, vacant property. The applicant, Turkey Ridge Development LLC, stated on its application the privately owned and operated detention facility would be developed in 18 months if it receives zoning approval. The application lists trustee Amelia L. Hill as the property’s owner.
But, that remains contingent upon the Planning Commission and its recommendation to the Independence City Council. |
