DescriptionLt. Gov. Jari Askins, a Democrat, plans to run for governor in 2010.

In a letter dated Friday and obtained by the Tulsa World on Sunday, Askins tells supporters she will "soon become a candidate for Governor of Oklahoma."

Askins on Sunday said she plans a formal announcement later this month.

Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson, a Democrat, has said he intends to run for governor and will not seek re-election as attorney general.

Gov. Brad Henry, a Democrat, is serving his second term and cannot seek re-election to the office.

Askins said her decision to run was not based on other possible candidates. She said her decision was based on her belief in her ability to do the job and her belief that she can win the election.

Askins is a former special district judge, House Democratic Leader and Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board chairwoman.

"I believe this experience in all three branches of government will serve Oklahoma well in the governor's office," she said in the letter.

Others mentioned for a possible bid for governor include State Treasurer Scott Meacham, a Democrat. U.S. Rep. Mary Fallin, R-Okla., and U.S. Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla.
