Michigan electors cast 17 votes for Obama, Biden

Description | LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- After a rough week in Washington, Michigan Democrats were in better spirits Monday while watching the state's 17 Electoral College votes be cast for President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden.
"I need some celebration," Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said during a 75-minute ceremony in the state Capitol.
The U.S. Senate last week thwarted federal loans to help ailing Detroit automakers when Republican leaders and the United Auto Workers could not agree on the timing of wage cuts.
"Last week we saw a very disappointing display of the worst of what politics has to offer," Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm told people gathered for Michigan's Electoral College ceremony. "So, change is what we voted for. And on Jan. 20, change is coming."
Electors met in the state Senate chamber Monday afternoon for the official vote. Democratic Lt. Gov. John Cherry presided over the ceremony.
The 17 electors included union members, Democratic Party activists and elected Democrats. UAW President Ron Gettelfinger, who was supposed to cast a vote, did not attend the ceremony. He was replaced by Swarn Rajpal, an Oakland county doctor and party activist... |
