Description | Virginia state Sen. Leslie L. Byrne said yesterday that she will not try to oust Rep. James P. Moran Jr., a fellow Democrat, from Congress because she believes it is more important to concentrate on getting President Bush out of the White House.
Byrne (D-Fairfax) said she has accepted a job as vice chairman of the Virginia campaign for Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean.
Byrne, a longtime state legislator who served one term in Congress, began exploring whether to challenge Moran in the 8th District Democratic primary next spring after the seven-term incumbent made controversial remarks about Jews and fended off conflict-of-interest allegations.
But, Byrne said yesterday, she realized that even if she won the seat, "I would still have George Bush in the White House, and that is just not acceptable."
