DescriptionTransport Minister John Baird said the Conservative government has backed away from a contentious proposal to slash public funding for political parties, in an interview with CTV Newsnet.

The proposed Tory policy, which was announced as part of the government's fall fiscal update, caused a firestorm in Ottawa earlier this week and raised the possibility that opposition parties would defeat the government in Parliament.

"It's not worth going to an election over," Baird told CTV Newsnet Saturday.

Meanwhile, the prime minister's chief of staff is urging Tory MPs to spend the weekend pushing the Conservative agenda in a blitz of local media outlets to stave off efforts by the opposition to form a coalition government.

Stephen Harper's chief of staff, Guy Giorno, issued a set of talking points via email for MPs to use, to re-focus public discourse on the benefits of a Conservative government versus the potential perils of a Liberal-New Democrat-Bloc coalition.
