Description"Andrea and I have made the decision to pass on the governor's race,'' the Oklahoma Democrat said.

"For the good of the state, I believe that I can be most effective at this time in Washington looking out for Oklahoma's interests.''

Boren said there are "many highly qualified'' candidates on both sides of the aisle who can move the state in the right direction.

His announcement came just one day after he was elected to a third two-year term in the U.S. House.

"I wanted it not to be a distraction for me getting ready for all we have to do in Washington on the economy, on the stimulus package and everything else,'' he said.

"There might have been some people making decisions based on what I was going to do.''

In response to questions, Boren also dismissed speculation that his decision might be a signal that he is interested in another race, such as one for U.S. Senate.

Republican Tom Coburn's Senate seat will be on the ballot in two years.

"There is no scenario where I will challenge Tom Coburn,'' Boren said.
