Descriptionundreds of people had the same idea Sunday afternoon. They would show up at the City-County Building in downtown Madison for early voting, thinking that they had the inside scoop and that others weren't aware of the Sunday opportunity.

Some had gotten calls or e-mails from the campaign of Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama saying as much.

But from the moment the city clerk's office opened at 1 p.m., the lines already stretched around the perimeter of the building's lobby, all the way down the long hallway until it totally looped around on itself. The line at its longest Sunday -- at about 2 p.m. -- took about two-and-a-half hours to complete.

Many in line said because of work obligations, they didn't want to chance long lines at the polls Tuesday. Some considered the two-hour wait a convenience they were willing to endure.

About half the voters brought something to read and many voted in pairs or groups. A few in the crowd wore iPods. Cell phone use was discouraged by signs posted on the walls.
