Description | Even if Joel Haugen doesn’t make it to Capitol Hill, he’ll have memories of what’s shaping up as one of the most unusual Congressional races in recent Oregon history.
Haugen, 58, won the Republican primary in May to challenge U.S. Rep. David Wu this fall, but after a tumultuous summer marked by spats with party leaders, Haugen decided to be listed on the ballot as a member of the Independent Party.
Many political pundits theorized that Haugen was trying to shed his GOP baggage in a year when Republican candidates are struggling throughout the state – and in a district (stretching from the Willamette River to the north Oregon Coast) that favors Democrats.
He says it was far less calculating than that.
“The Republican leadership simply was not supporting me and in some cases undermining my campaign,” said the Scappoose businessman. “The Independent Party, by contrast, was supporting me.” |
