DescriptionThe economy dominated a debate Monday between U.S. Rep. Ric Keller and challenger Alan Grayson, but the two U.S. House District 8 candidates spent more time slinging mud at each other than talking about solutions.

GOP incumbent Keller called Grayson an "ultraliberal" whose "kooky ideas ... inch toward socialism."

Grayson, a Democrat, called Keller a "cheap-shot artist" spreading a "parade of lies" and said Americans have been punished by "the Bush-Keller" regime.

The debate, sponsored by WMFE-Channel 24 and the League of Women Voters, was a no-holds-barred brawl.

The candidates struggled even when asked if they could think of anything nice to say about each other. Grayson, an attorney, said Keller was right to promise to serve only eight years, though he has broken the promise. Keller said Grayson is smart and has a nice family, and probably is a good advocate for other ultraliberals who want to cut off funding for troops in Iraq.

When it came time for specifics, Grayson said Congress should expand the availability of Federal Housing Administration home loans and allow the Small Business Administration to make direct loans to entrepreneurs.

"The Bush and Keller decision-making, the lack of leadership, the drift, the lack of clear thinking and the lies have brought us to the situation we're in right now," Grayson said. "Has Ric Keller done anything in the past eight years to justify allowing him to violate his own term-limit pledge?"
