DescriptionWhen Alan Grayson launched his first campaign for Congress in 2006, it was all about the war.

He's trying again in 2008, and his priorities haven't changed. This time, with support for the Iraq war waning, he's hoping for a better result against four-term Republican incumbent Ric Keller.

"It's been a staggering mistake on America's part, and it's drained our economy and led to a horrific price in terms of American blood," said Grayson, a Democrat.

Grayson was a political unknown until two years ago, when he lost the Democratic primary to Charlie Stuart. In 2008, he has spent more than $1 million of his own money to change that. With a series of slick TV ads, Grayson has portrayed himself as an enemy of "war profiteers."

The TV spots feature the 50-year-old lawyer railing against defense contractors who have supplied defective gear -- from body armor to fire extinguishers -- to American troops in Iraq.

Grayson was raised in the Bronx and earned degrees in government and law from Harvard. In 1990, he and a college friend started IDT, a telecommunications company. He stayed less than two years but made millions when the company went public.

He has since built a law firm on whistleblower cases, in which private citizens sue companies that defraud the government. Those cases have earned him four invitations to testify before congressional panels investigating contractor fraud, as well as profiles in Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone and The Wall Street Journal.
