Description WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Barack Obama will fly to Hawaii on Thursday to spend time with the grandmother who helped raise him and whose medical condition has become “very serious,” an aide announced Monday evening.

The trip will require him to scrap campaign events scheduled for Thursday in Madison, Wis., and Des Moines, Iowa.

Mr. Obama’s grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, is 86. She is at home in Honolulu after a recent hospital stay.

Campaign spokesman Robert Gibbs, speaking to reporters en route from Orlando to West Palm Beach, declined to provide details of her condition, citing privacy considerations, but said that “I think you understand that the decision that Sen. Obama is making underscores the seriousness of the situation.”

“As he said at the Democratic convention, she poured everything she had into him,” Mr. Gibbs said, and “she has always been one of the most important people in his life.”
