DescriptionWilliam F. Weld, the Republican candidate for governor, stood in the African Meeting House, the oldest black church in the country, to receive endorsements on Friday from an array of well known local liberals, including feminists, union leaders, blacks and homosexuals.

A tall, patrician Harvard graduate whose ancestors first landed in Boston in 1630 and whose father was a New York investment banker, Mr. Weld seemed an unlikely choice for some of the speakers, most of whom said they had never voted for a Republican before.

But one after another, they explained that they were frightened by Mr. Weld's Democratic opponent, John R. Silber, the president of Boston University, whose acerbic comments about working women, drug dealers and homosexuals have offended many people.

"This is a contest for governor between two Republicans," said Jerome Grossman, a former Democratic national committeeman. "I disagree with both of them on many issues, but I am voting for Bill Weld, because I believe John Silber is temperamentally unfit for public office. The issue here is character, not politics."

Anne Bernays, an author from Cambridge, said Dr. Silber had made statements "that are not only inappropriate, they are off the wall" She added, "He's not only unfit to be governor, I think he's unfit to be the head of Boston University."
