Description | Oregon Democrats are ecstatic over the possibility of widening their lead in the state House this fall, buoyed by soaring registration and retiring Republicans in the Portland suburbs.
The goal for Democrats is to pick up five seats, getting them to 36 members and giving them the constitutional right to raise taxes without Republican support next year. The Senate is expected to stay comfortably in the hands of Democrats.
Flipping five seats in any election is daunting, and lobbyists are downplaying the possibility even with the number of districts in play and the House Democrats' flush campaign account.
"I think much more likely they get to 33, 34, but there is a pathway to 36," says Chuck Bennett with the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators. |
