Description | An incumbent mayor won a second term in Fort Wayne Tuesday by beating the same opponent he defeated four years ago, ending a rematch that was one of the state's most competitive muncipal campaigns.
Democratic Mayor Graham Richard fought off a challenge from Republican Linda Buskirk, who lost to Richard in 1999 by 129 votes.
This time debate focused on economic development and the future of an aging mall on Fort Wayne's south side. With all precincts reporting, Richard had 27,251 votes, compared with 19,701 for Buskirk.
Another highly competitive race unfolded in Evansville, where Democratic state Rep. Jonathan Weinzapfel beat Republican incumbent Russell Lloyd Jr.
With all precincts reporting, Weinzapfel won 19,089 votes, compared with 10,063 for Lloyd, according to unofficial returns.
Lloyd was the only Republican mayor among the state's five largest cities. He won by 519 votes in 1999, making him the first Republican to win the office since his father's 1975 victory. |
