DescriptionParty insiders say that a decision has yet to be taken over the timing of the by-election triggered by the death last week of John McDougall, as strategists try to work out a date which will prove least harmful to the Prime Minister's planned autumn re-launch.

Senior Scottish party figures including Mr Brown gather in Fife this afternoon[mon] for Mr McDougall's funeral, after which they are expected to agree on a date and preferred candidate.

Although official campaigning will not begin until after the funeral, insiders north of the border have made a gloomy assessment of Labour's prospects of retaining the seat.

Privately, Mr Brown has been warned that the battle is already lost, and he is now being advised to focus on damage limitation.

Although a safe Labour seat on paper, the majority in Glenrothes is lower than that in Glasgow East, which the SNP won in a by-election last month, and has already been captured by the nationalists in the equivalent seat for the Scottish Parliament.
