Description | Omaha needs "new blood" and fresh ideas in the Mayor's Office to keep the city moving forward, Mike Fahey says.
That assessment came today as the city's longest-serving modern mayor announced he would step aside after two terms in office. Fahey's decision ends months of speculation by political insiders over whether he would try to defend his seat.
Fahey delivered the news before about 100 friends, supporters and civic leaders at Hanscom Park, a historic park in midtown intended to highlight the "neighborhood mayor's" longtime commitment to parks.
"I came into this office as a businessman. I tried to bring some of those experiences with me, and I think we have," he said during an interview before his announcement.
"When we started out in 2001, there were several things we had to address, whether it be out-of-control spending, trying to get community policing-oriented, returning civility to City Hall, along with making sure we prioritize neighborhoods. All of which I believe we have accomplished now. At this time, as I'm turning into my 65th year, I think it's time for some new blood to continue the momentum of our city." |
