Description | U.S. Sen. John Edwards cautioned Iowa voters Sunday that an economic turnaround is measured in jobs, not abstract numbers, as he campaigned for the presidency on the heels of an encouraging economic report.
The small crowds in the farm territory of north central Iowa didn't need the reminder.
"The Dow Jones (stock market average) goes up," said Ed O'Leary, a retired postal worker who listened to Edwards speak at a Fort Dodge house party, "but there aren't more jobs."
A report last week showed a rosier-than-expected 7.2 percent growth last quarter in the nation's gross domestic product, the measure of goods and services produced. The good news raised the question of how long the drooping economy will remain a potent issue for Edwards and the other Democrats hoping to win their party's nomination and challenge President Bush next fall.
