Description | Voters will again have their say on whether a gay-marriage prohibition should be written into the Arizona Constitution.
State lawmakers referred the proposal to the November ballot Friday evening following a rollicking and raw debate that split the ordinarily staid Senate wide open.
Democrats used filibusterlike tactics to hold off a vote for hours while Republicans schemed to cut debate short.
Gay marriage already is illegal in Arizona, but supporters of the proposal raised the specter of judicial activism in saying a constitutional ban is needed.
Sen. Paula Aboud, a lesbian legislator, called that argument a fraud.
"I don't think you're afraid of judges," the Tucson Democrat told her colleagues. "You're afraid of me and my relationship."
