Description | West Virginians have long been the target of inbreeding jokes.
Vice President Dick Cheney is just the latest to joke about West Virginians' supposed penchant for inbreeding.
Cheney explained in a speech to the National Press Club how he's a distant relative of Democratic presidential frontrunner Barack Obama. In describing his family lineage, he said he had Cheneys on both sides of his family.
"And we don't even live in West Virginia," Cheney said. The crowd, comprised of journalists, chuckled at the wisecrack.
Despite the ingrained stereotype, the inbreeding rate in West Virginia is no higher than other parts of the country, according to academic researchers and Appalachian culture experts. |
