DescriptionAssemblyman Mark Leno ousted incumbent state Sen. Carole Migden and fended off a strong challenge by former Marin Assemblyman Joe Nation to win the Democratic primary for the 3rd District Senate seat.

Leno attributed his victory to the progressive Democrats in Marin and Sonoma counties.

"Fifteen months ago they didn't know who I was, and I didn't know who they were, but we are fast and committed friends now," he said.

Nation nipped at Leno's heels throughout Tuesday night's tally, but Leno pulled away by the end of the evening.

"I think what made the difference were the 18 pieces of negative mail that landed on my head," Nation said. "That took its toll."

Migden did not return calls for comment.

With all of Marin's votes counted and 92 percent of San Francisco's precincts reporting, Leno led with 41,057 votes. Nation followed with 27,307 votes. Migden was close behind Nation with 26,275 votes.

"Obviously, it is Leno's night," said Brian Sobel, a Petaluma-based political analyst.

Sobel said Nation failed to attract as many San Francisco votes as he needed, and Leno did better than expected in Marin.

In Marin, Leno got 11,932 votes to Nation's 14,694. In San Francisco, Leno was leading early Wednesday with 26,202 votes to Nation's 5,129. Migden was running second in San Francisco with 14,746 votes.

"Leno ran a very fine campaign," Sobel said.
