Description | PARIS (Reuters) - Unpopular French President Nicolas Sarkozy admitted making mistakes during his first year in office but defended his record and pledged further reforms during a live prime time television interview on Thursday.
A potent mix of economic difficulties and personal problems has combined to push Sarkozy's opinion poll ratings to record lows for a president just 12 months into his term.
"Perhaps I did not explain myself enough, perhaps I made mistakes," Sarkozy said at the start of a 90-minute live interview aired on France's two leading television stations.
The broadcast is seen as an attempt to regain momentum and boost popularity ratings.
Sarkozy said circumstances had been against him, blaming surging oil prices, the subprime crisis and the appreciation of the euro against the dollar for some of France's poor indicators.
"The conclusion I draw from all that ... is that such shocks make it necessary to reform, to change and to adapt," he said. |
