Description | Vice Mayor Claudia Walters dropped a bombshell into the Mesa mayoral race Tuesday by endorsing former rival Scott Smith.
Smith and former Councilman Rex Griswold finished first and second, respectively, in the March 11 mayoral primary and will square off in a May 20 runoff election. Walters finished third.
“Both these men are friends,” Walters told The Mesa Republic, “but once I got past my own disappointment, I felt like I needed to look to what was really important, and that was Mesa's future.”
Walters said she thought about saying neutral in the mayoral runoff, but felt compelled to go public after long deliberations. |
