The Republican Party county chairmen in the 17th Congressional District plan to meet Saturday to choose a candidate to run against Rep. Phil Hare in the November election.

"We met on March 1 and interviewed some potential candidates," said Rock Island County Republican Chairman Susan Carpentier. While she wouldn't say who those candidates were, she did say Andrea Zinga of Coal Valley was definitely not one of them.

Ms. Zinga unsuccessfully ran against Mr. Hare in 2006 and against his predecessor Lane Evans in 2004. Mr. Hare received 57 percent of the votes in 2006.

"We don't have a definite answer yet as to whom that candidate will be. But I can tell you Andrea Zinga will not be running. She is not interested in it at this time," Ms. Carpentier said.

Ms. Carpentier did confirm there were three or four names in the hat. Each of the 23 county chairmen in the district will get one vote for each Republican Party ballot that was cast in their county during the last primary.

Ms. Carpentier said she has the most weighted votes because her county cast the most Republican ballots.

"My educated guess is that if we do slate a candidate, I'm sure that candidate will want to have a press conference. It'll be their decision," she said.

All or part of 23 counties make up the 17th District. On March 5, each county party organization held a county convention and elected or re-elected a county chairman.

"March 5, some of those (chairman seats) changed positions," Ms. Carpentier said. "Saturday, we will reconvene with those newly elected county chairs and make the decision at that time on who will be the candidate."
