Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) filed for reelection on Thursday, beating back suggestions that a federal investigation into his dealings might force the 84-year old into retirement.
The state board of elections said Stevens filed the required paperwork in its Anchorage office.
The longtime senator could face his most difficult race since being appointed to his seat in 1968 if questions about his relationship with a convicted VECO Corp. executive remain unresolved or the situation worsens for Stevens. Authorities are looking into work done on his home by the company.
Democrats are trying to woo Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich into the race. Should he enter, polls indicate he would be a formidable opponent for Stevens, who has never won less than 60 percent of the vote. |
