DescriptionWASHINGTON Rep. Loretta Sanchez today decided to endorse Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton for president.

After remaining mum for months on who she would throw her support behind, Sanchez told the Clinton campaign today that she would work to get the New York senator as many votes as she can in the California primary and other Super Tuesday states on Feb. 5.

"She's been through the wars,'' Sanchez, D-Garden Grove, said of Clinton. "She's got the scars. I think she's more qualified than the rest of the field. She's been a fighter on issues for women, for children."

Sanchez said she was not really anxious to get involved in the Democratic primary fight. She also said that the withdrawal of New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, the first Hispanic to run for president, made it easier for her to make a decision.

Sanchez's political allies are split on this one. Just hours before Sanchez told the Clinton campaign of her decision, her sister, Rep. Linda Sanchez, D-Lakewood, announced her support of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. And Wylie Aitken, founder of the Orange County Democratic Foundation and Loretta's longtime campaign chairman, has been campaigning for former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards.
