Description | "The Thirty-sixth Legislative District, based in Bergen, Essex, and Passaic, was one of the most competitive in the state throughout the last decade. No person has won this district by a margin much larger than six points since the 1980s. In this election cycle, the race for the seat seems no less competitive.
Incumbent Senator Garry Furnari resigned to take a judgeship in the middle of his second term after drawing the ire of Democratic leadership, and was replaced by Assemblyman Paul Sarlo. Former Assemblyman John Kelly, who narrowly lost to Furnari while McGreevey was sweeping the district, is again the Republican nominee."
