On the strength of their powerful advantage among women, Democrats appear well positioned to keep Michigan a blue state for the fifth straight presidential election next year, The Detroit Free Press/Local 4 Michigan Poll suggests.
The leading three Democrats -- Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards -- all win in head-to-head matchups with the three leading Republicans -- Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and John McCain -- according to a telephone poll conducted Monday through Wednesday of 800 Michigan adults who say they're likely to vote in November.

In the nine possible matchups, the smallest advantage any Democrat has among women is 20 percentage points (Clinton vs. McCain and Edwards vs. McCain). The most is 34 points (Obama vs. Romney). In six of the nine matchups, men favor Republicans, but by generally much smaller margins than women favor Democrats. The largest gender gap shows in a Clinton-Giuliani race, where women favor Clinton 61%-32% and men favor Giuliani 49%-39%.

Obama is the strongest Democrat in the head-to-head matchups. He has an advantage among both men and women against everyone but McCain. |
