DescriptionThe better part of my academic career was spent working with, serving in, running for office in, and campaigning with College Democrats of America. I considered it the greatest honor when twice I was placed in nomination for the office (National President) that you now hold. I just came off the campaign trail in Louisiana, having coordinated one of the gubernatorial campaigns that was unsuccessful. I was shocked, dismayed, and overall disgusted by the two statements you have made recently about the Republican nominee, Bobby Jindal.

These statements were rascist, ignorant, and filled with a tone that is not part of the College Democrats legacy. As someone who has made poor choices and mistakes in his life, I could fully understand, and forgive your first statement. I realize it was written in an immature, partisan frame of mind. But then your "apology" was nothing short of reprehensible and repugnant.

The Democratic Party has always been a party of reason, diversity, and unity. Your statements were nothing in that spirit. Moreover, College Democrats began as an organization that challenged to stand up and speak out, against social injustice. You may remember our organizations history, in 1967, we began, when we refused to be part of an organization that justified the war in Vietnam. We broke away and stood up. There are times for silence and that was not a time for silence, and neither is today.

You owe Bobby Jindal a true apology, as well as the Indian-American, Arab-American, and moreover the entire community of Louisiana. Your statements have marred what has generally been a campaign on issues, not personalities. I personally equate your statements and response as nothing more grotesque than statements equally made by David Duke.

Race-baiting is not acceptable! Neither is arrogance when faced with our own common fallacies. We are humans and therefore, we will always fall short of the glory of our Creator. But a continued hardening of heart and refusal to admit one is wrong, is a sign that one is not fit for the office of President of College Democrats.

Ashley, read the signature quote I have below. Take the words to heart. I regret now, I didn't challenge you for the Presidency, and run a third time. I may have spared College Democrats the embarassment that you have given to our great organization.

"So then, to every man his chance. To every man, regardless of his birth, his shining golden opportunity. To every man his right to live, to work, to be himself, to become whatever his manhood and his vision can combine to make him. This, seeker, is the promise of America!" Thomas Wolfe
