Description | Hoping to avoid a nasty primary fight, Republican Party leaders urged Attorney General Jon Bruning to drop out of the U.S. Senate race against Mike Johanns, GOP activists said.
Bruning spent part of Tuesday calling financial supporters, telling them of his plans to end his candidacy. He did not relish the prospect of a bruising campaign against Johanns, one of Bruning's financial backers said.
Former Omaha Mayor Hal Daub, who dropped his own Senate bid in September, said party officials in Washington pressured Bruning to get out to clear the field for Johanns, the former governor and former U.S. agriculture secretary.
Daub said contested primaries are good for the party, and he lamented that the party's leadership was encouraging Bruning to step aside.
"I see it as indirect pressure," Daub said. "And I think it's just as pernicious as the obscene costs of running for office."
Bruning formally announced his decision to withdraw Tuesday night in Omaha. |
