DescriptionStephen R. Fielder, a 59-year-old former Bunker Hill lawyer, was found guilty Wednesday of first-degree murder. He now faces a sentence of life in prison without parole.

Fielder denied killing his ex-wife, 47-year-old Debra Ann Fielder, but admitted on the stand to dismembering her body, which was found stuffed in suitcases in Back Creek last year.

“We’ve seen some gruesome deaths before, but it’s definitely the most gruesome disposition of a body that I’ve seen,” Berkeley County Prosecutor Pamela Games-Neely said.

The jury of eight men and four women deliberated for a little more than an hour Wednesday before returning with the verdict. The jury began deliberations late Tuesday before breaking for the evening.

Jurors did not recommend mercy, meaning Fielder will receive a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 10 before Berkeley County Circuit Court Judge David Sanders.
