DescriptionPresident Bush today vetoed a Congressionally-approved plan to expand children's health insurance. While the plan received enough Senate support to override the veto, it fell short in the House of Representatives.

Now, this isn't all about money: the President sees expansion as a step down the slippery slope to socialized medicine, and says it would help middle-class families who don't need it. But Bush also claimed that expansion is too expensive.

So let's put that expense in perspective: the difference between Congress's plan and the President's is $25 billion over the next five years. That, in short, is the cost of giving health coverage to four million uninsured kids. That's also how much money the United States will spend in Iraq during the next two months.
