Description | Former Rep. Charles Vanik, a longtime liberal Democratic congressman from Cleveland who co-authored a historic law that links trade to human rights, died in his sleep this morning at his home in Jupiter, Fla.
He was 94.
Vanik, a grandson of Czechoslovakian immigrants who represented parts of Cleveland and its eastern suburbs in Congress from 1955 to 1981, spent much of his career in Washington as a politician and later as a lawyer working on trade issues related to his Eastern European roots.
By the time he retired from Congress, he was one of the most senior members of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee and chairman of its trade subcommittee. |
