DescriptionGordon O'Connor has lost his job as Minister of Defence in a cabinet shuffle widely viewed as an attempt by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to reinvigorate Canada's politically sensitive mission in Afghanistan.

Peter MacKay was sworn in this afternoon as the new Defence Minister at a ceremony at Rideau Hall. Mr. O'Connor moves to National Revenue.

Mr. MacKay leaves the Foreign Affairs portfolio, where he will be replaced by Maxime Bernier, a rising Quebec presence who served as the government's main French-language spokesman on its spring budget.

Mr. Bernier leaves Industry, replaced by former Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice.

Other cabinet appointments today include:

- Gerry Ritz, Secretary of State for Small Business and Tourism, is promoted to Agriculture and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board

- Alberta's Diane Ablonczy, the only MP backbencher to be promoted to cabinet, takes over for Mr. Ritz

- Josée Verner moves from International Co-operation to Heritage.

- Bev Oda moves from Heritage to Minister of International Co-operation

- Revenue Minister Carol Skelton, who previously announced she will not run in the next election, has been dropped from cabinet.

- Chuck Strahl leaves Agriculture to become Indian Affairs minister.

- Gerry Ritz as Agriculture Minister. He replaces Ms. Skelton as the Saskatchewan representative in cabinet.
