Description | Two-term state Rep. Ernie Alexander has announced he will not seek re-election this fall.
Alexander, 74, a Republican who represents south Lafayette Parish, said in a statement that he’d testified years ago on behalf of two-term term limits.
Eventually, three-term limits were adopted, which means Alexander is eligible for one more term.
“Nevertheless, a strong commitment to term-limits has tugged at my conscience,” Alexander said. “I feel obligated to honor that original intent.”
Alexander, who ran unopposed in 2003, was slated to face opposition this fall from Page Cortez, a 46-year-old Republican and furniture store owner.
Cortez, who has yet to officially announce, has reportedly already begun raising money for a run. |
