CHEYENNE -- State lawmakers working to close a loophole in campaign finance law shifted gears momentarily Tuesday and proposed legislation that could more than triple the limit individuals are allowed to give to political campaigns in Wyoming.

The Joint Corporations, Elections and Political Subdivisions Interim Committee voted to raise the limit for individual donors from $1,000 per election to $3,500 -- a figure that is 34 percent larger than the federal individual donor limit for 2008.

The committee also voted to eliminate the current $25,000 cap on individual donations to all state and local political campaigns in a single election cycle. By comparison, the federal limit for all political donations in a single election cycle is slightly more than $108,000.

Dan Neal of the Equality State Policy Center, a group that advocates for "good government" measures, said the changes, if approved by the full Legislature, could result in a flood of new money into Wyoming election campaigns.
