DescriptionAfter an impassioned yet cordial debate, Assembly Democrats voted again Tuesday to legalize gay marriage - a gesture that is almost certain to be rebuffed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
For 90 minutes, some 29 members of the Assembly hashed out the merits of AB43, which would change the definition of marriage to a union of two people, rather than one man and one woman. It passed by a vote of 42-34.

Backers of the bill by Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, spoke passionately about human dignity, the march of civil rights and the committed gay relationships they see every day.

Assembly Speaker Fabian Nu`ñez, D-Los Angeles, questioned how anyone can judge another couple's love. Nu`ñez cited his own relationship, in which he married, divorced and re-married his wife, with whom he has three children.

"What makes me more important than Mr. Laird reaching out to a man he loves and proposing matrimony?" Nu`ñez asked, referring to Assemblyman John Laird of Santa Cruz, who has been with his partner for 11 years. "Or Mr. Leno for that matter? ... What makes me more special or more important than them?"

The Assembly first approved of gay marriage in 2005, when it took multiple votes and much arm-twisting to eke out passage. Schwarzenegger later vetoed the measure.

This time, opposition to the bill, while still fervent, was far less personal. The Republicans who spoke against the measure
