Description | If taxpayers funded elections in South Carolina, candidates could spend their time talking to residents, instead of raising campaign cash, and would not be beholden to big-donor special interests after the election, supporters of a so-called "clean" elections bill told senators Wednesday.
"This is a bill to give the public greater trust in the system," its sponsor, Sen. Clementa Pinckney, D-Ridgeland, said during a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing. No vote was taken.
Pinckney said the proposal would cost each voting-age resident in South Carolina just a penny per day, for an estimated total of $10 million a year.
While that sounds great, it's not a realistic idea, said Sen. Robert Ford, D-Charleston. |
