DescriptionGay rights advocates in Washington are celebrating. Majority Democrats in the Washington State House have passed Domestic Partnership legislation.

The bill allows gay couples and unmarried elderly couples to register with the state as domestic partners. This would afford them some of the same rights as married couples.

State Representative Jamie Pedersen, an openly gay Democrat, says the legislation won't solve all of the difficulties gay and lesbian couples face.

Jamie Pedersen: "But it's a start toward addressing some of those injustices. It's not marriage, but it does provide for some of the rights and obligations that we ask for people to undertake when they're in loving relationships recognized by the state."

This includes hospital visitation rights.

Critics say the Domestic Partnership legislation is a slippery slope toward gay marriage. Sponsors readily admit gay marriage is their eventual goal.

The legislation previously passed the State Senate. So now it heads to the governor, who's expected to sign it into law.
