An excerpt...
"The organization that represents Pennsylvania’s county commissioners has told a state senate committee that moving up the state’s presidential primary would cause too many problems to be worthwhile.
The state’s top election official, secretary of state Pedro Cortes, said on Tuesday that it would be better if there were some agreement among the states for an orderly presidential primary process. But in lieu of that, he says:
“…I do not believe the Pennsylvanians should be left out of the process, so I endorse the stopgap measure of advancing Pennsylvania’s primary in 2008 to February 5th.”
But Douglas Hill, director of the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania, says his members oppose the change:
“And while that may appear self-serving simply because it makes it difficult for our election administration, we believe it’ll also be problematic for candidates for office, for those who work the polls, and in some respects for the voters themselves.”
Hill says current timelines must remain intact so that, among other things, candidates have adequate time to complete the nominating process and so that overseas ballots can be prepared and mailed." |
