Description | LINWOOD — Small election, big stakes.
Just 172 members of the Atlantic County Republican Committee will decide Tuesday night who gets to replace Bill Gormley as the state senator from the 2nd Legislative District, a powerhouse seat that covers most of Atlantic County.
The choice: Assemblyman Frank Blee, a low-key Gormley ally who has carved out a reputation as a leader on state budget and health-care issues, or Egg Harbor Township Mayor James “Sonny” McCullough, an old-school, conservative politician whose entrance in the race is fueled in part by a long-running feud with the man he wants to replace.
Each candidate comes with the seal of approval from one of the two most powerful Republican politicians in the region. Gormley endorsed Blee as his replacement the day he announced he would not seek another term. U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo, Atlantic County's congressman, endorsed McCullough at a press conference days later.
The power of both men will mean little Tuesday. The county committee members will select a new state senator by secret ballot behind a curtain — and neither Gormley nor LoBiondo has a vote.
