Description | PARIS, France (Reuters) -- French center-right presidential candidate Nicolas Sarkozy faced a fresh conflict of interest row on Tuesday over police use of DNA tests to catch thieves who stole the scooter of one of his sons.
Critics said it was unusual for DNA tests to be used in such a case and centrist presidential candidate Francois Bayrou said it showed there was one rule for the powerful and another for the weak, something that would change if he were elected in May.
As interior minister Sarkozy runs the country's police force and has already come under pressure to step down following revelations police intelligence had investigated an aide to Socialist presidential challenger Segolene Royal.
Socialist lawmakers asked the country's Constitutional Council to rule on whether Sarkozy could be a candidate and remain in his ministerial post.
Sarkozy, in London for a meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair, was not immediately available for comment but police spokesman Patrick Hamon denied any special treatment. |
