DescriptionDemocratic majority may pressure congresswoman to vote with party

Come Thursday morning after she finishes raising her right hand to be sworn into her second term, U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean might finally be able to exhale.

Since 2002, the Barrington businesswoman has been running virtually nonstop for Congress, twice as a challenger and once as the incumbent, in high-stakes, tight races in which tens of millions of dollars were spent.

Now, having turned back a well-heeled challenge to her re-election from Republican millionaire investment banker David McSweeney, Bean, it seems, can finally relax a little.

“I think there’s another two years to establish and keep the promises I made,” Bean told the Daily Herald. “I ran for four years, and so people knew me and what I stood for. I think that contributed to why some of the attacks fell flat this time. People knew me, and the attacks didn’t jibe with what they knew of me.”

The 8th Congressional District had been GOP territory for decades, with Bean upsetting longtime Republican Rep. Phil Crane in 2004 after losing to him in 2002. Despite pulling out all the stops, the national GOP could not upend Bean two months ago.
