Description | Gov. Blagojevich on Monday signed legislation raising the state's $6.50-an-hour minimum wage and vowed to muscle through a permanent cost-of-living increase over the objections of Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan (D-Chicago).
The bill that was a cornerstone of the governor's re-election campaign raises the minimum wage to $7.50 an hour in July and by 25 cents an hour in each of the next three years -- to $8.25 an hour by July 2010.
After that, the 649,000 Illinois residents at the bottom rung of the economic ladder would once again be at the mercy of state politicians.
On Monday, Blagojevich promised euphoric supporters who jammed the Bethel New Life Center, 1140 N. Lamon, that he would tackle the "unfinished business" in January -- with or without Madigan's help. |
