DescriptionPosted: 1:21 PM- A northern Utah sheriff's deputy pulling over a suspicious van carrying armed men Tuesday morning was the first indication federal immigration agents were on their way to raid the Swift & Co. plant in Hyrum that employs some 1,200 workers.

An official at the 1st District Court in Logan said 60 warrants had been issued to the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees immigration enforcement.

The plant, one of Cache County's largest employers, is among six processing facilities in as many states where agents are interrogating workers in connection with an identity theft investigation. The Utah plant, along with processing facilities in Cactus, Texas; Grand Island, Neb.; Marshalltown Iowa, Worthington, Minn., and at the company headquarters in Greeley, Colo., represent all of Swift's domestic beef processing and 77 percent of its pork processing capacity.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement or ICE, which executed civil search warrants, said its investigation indicates large numbers of illegal immigrants may have assumed the identities of U.S. citizens and lawful residents and improperly used their Social Security numbers to gain employment at Swift facilities.

ICE agents and the Federal Trade Commission have identified hundreds of potential victims in the investigation that began in February, federal officials said, adding the total number of arrests was not immediately available.
