If it was a Democratic wave that swept the country last month, it was a Democratic tsunami rushing over New Hampshire.

Battle lines will surely be drawn in 2008 in the Granite State over its two state houses and two U.S. House seats, which all flipped Democratic in dramatic fashion on Election Day — not to mention the state’s having the first presidential primary in the nation.

But the lone red state in the Northeast, if one can still call it red, still has two Republican senators who were not up for reelection this year. In two years, however, freshman Sen. John Sununu (R) could well be headed for a race worthy of what has become the biggest little state in American politics.

Nearly a quarter of the 400 seats in the state House flipped, and exactly one quarter of the 24 seats in the state Senate flipped. Democrats now control each chamber with a nearly 60 percent majority.

Coupled with the reelection of Democratic Gov. John Lynch, these shifts give New Hampshire Democrats control of the state capitol for the first time in more than 130 years and a bright eye toward 2008 and, specifically, Sununu’s seat.

“Certainly, the environment is more favorable for a Democrat than it has been in quite some time,” said Portsmouth Mayor Steve Marchand (D), who last week indicated he would weigh a challenge to Sununu. “From a Democratic perspective, New Hampshire had about as favorable a day as any state in the country a few weeks ago.”
