Description | He was a highly successful Democratic governor from a decidedly Republican state, one who cut crime, increased spending on education, cut taxes and welfare rolls, and left office with a record budget surplus.
In the three-by-five card world of politics, that kind of shorthand description typically would depict a dream candidate.
But in this case, the resume of the candidate, Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana, grew to include being twice elected to the U.S. Senate, and therein may lie Bayh's greatest challenge as he seeks to run for president. Now, he is one of many.
A Bayh spokesman said Friday the senator would file his formal papers next week in Washington to form a presidential exploratory committee as the first step toward a full-fledged White House bid. He will campaign in Iowa on Monday--his 12th trip to the first-in-the-nation-caucus state, followed by a stop in New Hampshire, where he has already been a half dozen times. |
