DescriptionWASHINGTON - Dan Glickman took himself out of U.S. Senate consideration Tuesday.

The move appears to make Sam Brownback's seat safer than ever and highlights Kansas Democrats' continuing problems with fielding federal candidates.

Glickman, the former nine-term Democratic congressman from Wichita and secretary of agriculture under President Clinton, said that for the foreseeable future he's staying at Harvard University, where he directs the Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government.

While never saying never, Glickman, 58, said "something would have to open from the heavens" for him to run again.

"One could never do this kind of race without a lot of background preparation," he said. "I haven't done those things."

Glickman's decision surprised almost no one. While lobbying by Democrats in Kansas and in Washington caused him to look at the race, he had always leaned against running.
